SHERMAN, Texas – The Concordia Texas volleyball team opened the 2018 campaign with a split Friday, winning their first match 3-0 over Centenary before falling 3-1 against Austin College at the Austin College Classic at Hughey Gymnasium.
The Tornados opened the season with 25-23, 25-23, 25-22 sweep of Centenary and followed it up with a 16-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-22 loss to tournament host Austin College.
In the first game of the day, CTX played three competitive sets against the Ladies, earning a thrilling victory. The Tornados were led by the combination of
Marissa Stinson and
Marjani Myles, who both had double-digit kills in the victory.
Stinson, a junior from Pearland, Texas, closed the game with 12 kills and a whopping .500 hitting percentage while Myles, a sophomore out of Houston, produced 10 kills along with five assists and four digs.
Setter
Georgia Quiroz was also fantastic in the win, picking up her 14th career double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.
As a team, the Tornados had a .242 attack percentage while holding Centenary to just .153.
The second match of the day for CTX opened with a 25-16 first set win over the Kangaroos, but saw AC come back to win the final three sets and grab a 3-1 victory.
The Tornados closed the first set on a 7-0 run to take a 1-0 lead. Concordia was unable to keep the momentum going, however, and fell to 1-1 on the young campaign.
Myles and Stinson, along with junior right side hitter Sam Mendez, all had double-digit kills with 12, 12 and 10, respectively.
Next up, CTX will continue play in the Austin College Classic with two games Saturday against the Univ. of Dallas and Millsaps at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
