CTX defeats Millsaps, falls to Dallas at Austin College Classic

SHERMAN, Texas – Marissa Stinson had a career day Saturday, setting career highs in both blocks and kills to help the Concordia Texas volleyball team split a pair of matches against the University of Dallas and Millsaps in the Austin College Classic at Hughey Gymnasium.

The Tornados opened the day by dropping a thrilling 3-2 match against UD, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 13-15. CTX bounced back in game two, however, picking up a 3-1 win over Millsaps, 25-18, 29-27, 23-25, 25-14.

Stinson, a junior out of Pearland, Texas, began the day by tying a career high in blocks with seven and followed it up with her first career 20 kill performance in the win over the Majors. In four games at the Austin College Classic, Stinson racked up 59 kills and 20 blocks.

In the first match of the day, the Crusaders and the Tornados played a back-and-forth affair, with neither team winning back-to-back sets in the contest.

After UD grabbed the first set of the match, CTX bounced back to win set number two, thanks in large part to holding UD to a -.026 hitting percentage in the set.

The two teams exchanged sets three and four before the Crusaders edged out a 15-13 win in set number five to take home the victory.

In game two, the Tornados had three players in double-digit in kills as Stinson, Kelly Farina and Tristyn Massey had 20, 11 and 11 kills, respectively.

After winning the first set 25-18, CTX got a gripping 29-27 win in set number two, fending off two set points for the Majors.

The Tornados were phenomenal at the point of attack, hitting .226 while holding Millsaps to .148 and out-blocking the Majors 8-2.

Defensively, Rylee Davis closed the day with a career-high 23 digs in both contests, the most on the team. Georgia Quiroz, meanwhile, had her third double-double of the year against UD with 38 assists and 19 digs and followed it up with a 49 assist, eight dig performance in the win over Millsaps.

Next up, the Tornados will travel to San Antonio, Texas, to take part in the Trinity Fall Classic on Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8. The first game for the Tornados will be against Schreiner at 5:00 p.m., followed by a 7:00 p.m. matchup against La Verne.
