BELTON, Texas –
Cayla Gonzalez's header in the 56th minute cut the deficit in half, but the Concordia Texas women's soccer team's rally came up short, falling 2-1 to Texas Lutheran in the season opener on Friday.
The Tornados fired off a total of 14 shots in the game, seven of them being on goal, but were only able to find the back of the net once.
The Bulldogs struck first in the 12th minute after a mad scramble in the box ended with the ball into the back of the net and led 1-0.
Savannah McHam would nearly equalize it twice in a span of three minutes with two of her four first half shots hitting the crossbar. Texas Lutheran would tack on another goal before the end of the first half and led 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, CTX would battle back as Gonzalez, who led the team in goals scored last season, notch her first of the season with a header in the 56th minute off an
Emily Newton corner kick.
The Tornados would continue to search for the equalizer in the closing minutes, but came up short, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Bulldogs.
Concordia Texas will play their second game in as many days, when they take on Southwestern on Saturday at 7:30 from the Cru Soccer Field in Belton, Texas.
