SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Concordia Texas volleyball team opened the Trinity Fall Classic with a bang on Friday, earning back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of Schreiner and La Verne at Sams Gymnasium.
The Tornados started the night with a dominant 25-5, 25-19, 25-16 win over the Mountaineers and followed it up with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-14 victory over the Leopards to move to 4-2 on the season.
In the first match of the day, CTX opened the first set on a 10-1 run and never looked back. Concordia had an attack percentage of .480 while holding Schreiner to -.240 in the set.
After a convincing win in set two for the Tornados, Schreiner bounced back in the third set, taking a 14-13 lead. CTX slammed the door, however, closing the game on a 12-2 run to complete the sweep.
In the win,
Kelly Farina produced her second consecutive double-double with a season-high 13 kills to go along with 10 digs.
As a team, the Tornados racked up eight service aces while hitting .344.
The second match was a back-and-forth affair, with La Verne cutting the CTX lead to 21-19 in set number one before the Tornados eventually put the game away.
Runs dominated the second set, with Concordia jumping ahead 14-6 early in the match. After the Leopards bounced back with a 7-0 run to take a 20-19 lead, CTX responded by winning the final six points of the set.
The Tornados closed set number three strong as well, winning 13 of the final fifteen points.
Marissa Stinson was absolutely dominant in the win, racking up 13 kills and hitting a whopping .750. Stinson, a junior from Pearland, Texas, has now amassed over 600 kills in her career with CTX.
The Trinity Fall Classic continues Saturday as the Tornados take on #5 Trinity at 12:45 p.m., followed by a match with Texas Lutheran at 5:15 p.m.
