ROUND ROCK, Texas –
Omar Aguirre netted his first career hat trick as the Concordia Texas men's soccer team exploded for four goals to defeat LeTourneau 4-1 in their conference opener on Thursday.
Aguirre's hat trick is the first one for the men's program since
Alejandro Labastida tallied three goals in the Tornados' American Southwest Conference opening win over East Texas Baptist on Sept. 13, 2017.
Aguirre and CTX struck first, when
Ronny Garza and
Bryan Luna worked to find Aguirre, who faked out the goalie and shot into the left side of the net to make it 1-0 in the 23rd minute.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets would come roaring back, scoring the equalizing goal in the 74th minute to even it at 1-all.
The Tornados would respond though as the team scored three goals in the final 12 minutes of the game.
Aguirre would lead the charge, scoring goal number two of the night in the 79th minute, when, off a free kick, Garza would find
Alex Bridges, who would play a perfect pass to Aguirre in the box, shooting it pass the goalie to put CTX back on top.
Aguirre would complete the hat trick in the 88th minute, when Erik Villaba's free kick hit the crossbar and Aguirre was there with the follow-up header to make it 3-1.
With the hat trick, Aguirre moves into the top-three all-time goal scorers in program history with 13 in his career, chasing former teammate Labastida, who has the record with 19.
In the same minute,
Trevor Stovall would record his first goal of the 2018 season, when
Edgar Guerrero found him streaking down the left side, firing it past the goalie to put CTX up 4-1 and the game out of reach.
Up next, the Tornados will have a quick turnaround when they will host ETBU at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., searching their second-straight ASC win.
