Tornados drop five set heartbreaker to Southwestern

AUSTIN, Texas – Four Tornados registered double-digit kills but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas volleyball team fell in 3-2 Tuesday night at Concordia Fieldhouse.
 
Kelly Farina, Marissa Stinson, Tristyn Massey and Marjani Myles each had at least 10 kills over five sets as CTX fell 25-22, 14-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-12. With the loss, the Tornados drop to 5-6 on the season.
 
The Pirates opened the match with a 6-1 run to open set one and used the momentum to grab a 25-22 win.
 
The Tornados bounced back in sets two and three; however, outscoring Southwestern 50-34 over two sets to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Trailing 4-1 in the second set, CTX went on a massive 10-0 run for CTX to take an 11-4 advantage. The Tornados never looked back and picked up a dominant 25-14 victory.
 
Set number three was back-and-forth throughout. With the two teams tied at 18, Concordia scored seven of the final nine points in the set to win 25-20.
 
Southwestern bounced back to win set number four 25-16 and force a winner-take-all fifth set.
 
With CTX leading 8-6 in the final frame, the Pirates went on a run of their own winning six straight points to take the match.
 
Farina, a junior from Spring, Texas, and Stinson, a junior out of Pearland, Texas, both had a team-high 13 kills in the loss.
 
Massey, meanwhile, picked up her second double-double in three games with 12 kills and 10 digs. Reigning American Southwest Conference co-offensive player of the week Georgia Quiroz also grabbed a double-double with 49 assists and 17 digs.
 
Defensively, sophomore libero Rylee Davis had a career-high 24 digs while also producing two service aces.
 
The Tornados will return to ASC action in the first ASC Crossover hosted by Mary Hardin-Baylor this weekend starting Friday with a 3:00 p.m. matchup against UT Dallas in Belton, Texas.
