AUSTIN, Texas – For the fifth straight game, the Concordia Texas volleyball team earned a victory via a sweep, defeating Howard Payne 3-0 Saturday at Concordia Fieldhouse.
The five game winning streak is the longest for the Tornados since the 2000, when the Tornados rattled off six straight victories. With the win, CTX moves to 5-2 in American Southwest Conference play, just 0.5 game out of second play in the ASC West.
For the Tornados,
Sam Mendez led the way with 11 kills while hitting .714.
Tristyn Massey, meanwhile, added 10 kills for her third straight game with double-digit kills.
Over three sets, the Tornados racked up eight service aces with
Rylee Davis leading the way, picking up three.
In the first set, CTX used a 7-0 run to take a 14-5 lead and never looked back, grabbing a 25-13 win.
Trailing 13-5 in set number two, the Tornados went on a 10-1 run to take a 15-14 lead. CTX fell behind once again 22-18 late in the set, but were not to be denied as they scored the final seven points of the set to win 25-22.
In the third and final set, the Tornados were able to keep HPU at arms-length for the entirety of the set, winning 25-19.
As a team, CTX hit .286 in the game while holding the Yellow Jackets to just .106.
Next up, the Tornados will travel to Abliene, Texas, Tuesday for an ASC West showdown against McMurry at 6:00 p.m.
