Tornados drop overtime thriller against McMurry 70-69

AUSTIN, Texas – Four different Tornados scored in double figures, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's basketball team dropped a 70-69 contest in overtime Thursday night at Concordia Fieldhouse.

Behind a clutch late basket from Allie Garza, CTX was able to force overtime after trailing 62-60 with 0:37 left in regulation. In the overtime period, however, the War Hawks used an 8-2 run to take home the victory.

Garza, a freshman from Houston, produced 11 points and six assists in the loss while Payton Berger had a team-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds.

The two teams traded buckets early on, with neither team leading by more than six points for the entirety of the first half.

Trailing 24-21 late in the second quarter, CTX went on an 8-0 run to take the lead and headed into the locker room with a 29-26 advantage.

The Tornados were able to push their lead to as many as eight thanks to a 9-2 run in the middle of the third. McMurry hung around, however, never allowing the deficit to grow to double digits and headed into the final stanza trailing 49-44.

The War Hawks were able to make a push in the fourth quarter, outscoring CTX 11-4 over the final 6:10 of regulation to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Garza started the Tornados off hot by finishing a 3-point play after a made layup and a foul. McMurry was able to make more shots down the stretch, including going 4-for-6 from the free throw line to grab the victory.

Alyssa Marquez and Keturah Taylor joined Garza and Berger in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Next up, CTX will look to begin a new winning streak when they take on Hardin-Simmons Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Concordia Fieldhouse.
