Bone, Tornados scorch Howard Payne 87-79

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's basketball team shoot 63 percent from the field, led by Spencer Bone's career-high 36 points to take down Howard Payne 87-79 on the road on Saturday.

The Tornados would knock down 14 3-pointers for the game, 10 of them coming from Bone, who shot 10-of-14 from behind the arc and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line for a career-high 36 points.

It is the most points scored by a CTX player since Ephriam Price III scored 37 against East Texas Baptist earlier this season on Dec. 1.

Joe Neal, meanwhile, continued his scoring barrage, tallying 29 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. It is the 14th game this season that Neal has scored at least 20 in a game and now sits 38 points shy of 1,500 for his career.

The Tornados would lead from the jump, opening the game on a 12-4 run and never looked back. The team would shoot 64 percent from the field in the first half, including an 8-for-15 mark from the 3-point line.

The Yellow Jackets, though, would cut it to one with 6:19 to play in the first half, but CTX would push their lead up to nine thanks to a 13-2 run and led 43-34 at the halfway point, led by Bone and Neal, who had 15 points each.

In the second half, the Tornados would continue to stay hot offensively, thanks to Bone, who scored 12 points in the first eight minutes of the half.

Concordia Texas would take their biggest lead of the game at 72-52 after Ronnie Hamilton knocked down his lone 3-pointer on the day. He would finish the game with seven points and four assists.

Howard Payne would not go quietly though and would cut the deficit to eight late in the game, but Bone would knock down his fifth and sixth free throws of the afternoon to cap off his shooting performance and the Tornados held on for the 87-79 win.

Concordia Texas has now won seven of their last eight games and eight of their last nine conference matchups.

The Tornados will stay on the road, traveling to Abilene, Texas to take on Hardin-Simmons on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
