ROUND ROCK, Texas –
Cayla Gonzalez,
Kaycee Moore and
Pamela Lasprilla all recorded a goal as the Concordia Texas women's soccer team hung on late to defeat Sul Ross State 3-2 on Thursday.
It was a shootout between the Tornados and Lobos as the teams combined for 35 total shots on the day.
Concordia Texas opened the scoring in the first half, as Gonzalez played a bouncing ball from just outside the box, volleying it on a line over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 24th minute.
The Tornados extended their lead in the 35th minute when Moore intercepted a SRSU pass in the midfield, took a couple of touches past the midfield line before firing a rocket into the top-right corner of the net, doubling their advantage.
At the halfway point, CTX held a 2-0 lead over the Lobos.
Sul Ross State would not go quietly though, cutting the deficit in half with a goal in the 65th minute.
The Tornados countered in 76th minute as
Elisa LeBoeuf found Moore, who played a perfect through pass to Lasprilla and shot it into the low-left corner, past the goalie, and into the net to restore CTX's two-goal advantage.
The Lobos responded once again in the final minutes of the game, scoring off a free kick in the 87th minute, chipping the lead to one once again. It was one of SRSU's 15 shots in the second half as they looked to force overtime.
The Tornados would hold off the Lobos' late comeback though, securing the 3-2 win as time ran out.
Next up, Concordia Texas will have a quick turnaround, hosting Howard Payne on Saturday at 1 p.m., at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas.
