Gomez, Tornados repel Yellow Jackets 1-0

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Victor Gomez's header in the 71st minute proved to be the game-winner as the Concordia Texas men's soccer team won their second game in a row, defeating Howard Payne 1-0 on Saturday at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.

The Tornados controlled possession for most of the game, registering 24 total shots, including nine of them on goal. Goalie Erik Rodriguez and the defense limited the Yellow Jackets' attack, holding them to six shots, including only one in the first half.

Despite 14 shots in the first half, CTX were held scoreless and the teams headed to the locker room, knotted up at 0-0.

In the second half, the Tornados broke through in the 71st minute after a high cross from Brandon Barrows from right side of the final third found the head of Gomez, who knocked it past the goalie to make it 1-0.

In the final minutes of the game, HPU looked to even the score, but Rodriguez was there with the one-handed save to push the ball over the crossbar and keep it at 1-0. It was one of his three saves on the day as CTX held on for the win.

Next, the Tornados will head back on the road for a four-game trip, beginning in Pineville, La., where they will face Louisiana College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
