AUSTIN, Texas –
Georgia Quiroz recorded 23 assists and set the program record for most assists in an individual's career as the Concordia Texas volleyball won their third match in a row with a 3-1 win over LeTourneau on the first day of the American Southwest Conference Crossover on Friday.
Quiroz had a team-high 23 assists in the match and now has 2,238 for her career, surpassing Bianca Martinez's school record of most assists in an individual's career.
The Tornados, meanwhile, registered double-digit kills in three of the match's four sets to defeat the Yellow Jackets 25-20, 25-17, 12-25 and 25-19.
Concordia Texas struggled to find their footing in the opening set, dropping the first three points of the frame before stringing together a 4-0 run to take the lead and never look back.
Sam Mendez and
Tristyn Massey each had four kills in the set as the Tornados took a 1-0 lead.
In the second set,
Sarah Ghormley powered CTX to another set win, tallying six of her career-high 17 kills in the period and the Tornados went up 2-0 in the match after winning five of the final seven points.
LeTourneau would not go down easily though, hitting at a .357 percentage in the third set to force a fourth frame.
Late in the final set, CTX would hold a slight 18-17 edge over the Yellow Jackets before reeling off seven of the set's final nine points, capped off by a LETU service error to seal the 3-1 win.
The Tornados finished with a season-high 10 total blocks, including a game-high five by
Marjani Myles. Besides breaking the school record, Quiroz also racked up a season-high 18 digs and recorded her eighth double-double of the season.
Ghormley, meanwhile, added 13 digs along with her 17 kills for her second straight double-double and fifth of the season.
Rylee Davis finished the match with 14 digs, and crept closer to the 1000-dig mark, now sitting 11 shy of becoming just the fifth player ever in program history to reach prestigious milestone.
Next, the Tornados will face the top team from the ASC East in UT Dallas, who is coming off a five-set defeat to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday night. Concordia Texas will face the Comets on Saturday at 10 a.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
