Tornados use second half surge to complete comeback win over Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. – Philip Meikle scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Concordia Texas men's basketball team to a  79-74 come-from-behind win over Lewis & Clark on Wednesday in the Pamplin Sports Center.

Meikle, the senior out of Cypress, Texas, did most of his damage from the free throw line, shooting 14-of-17 from the foul line on the night. Tommy Holiday, meanwhile, was influential down the stretch, scoring 11 of his 17 points in the final nine minutes of the game.

Concordia Texas started the game off fast, building an early 10-point advantage after Luis Gonzalez's steal and layup to make it 22-12 midway through the first half.

The Pioneers, though, responded with a 23-2 run to take a double-digit advantage in the final minutes of the period. Meikle knocked down a pair of free throws to cut it to 37-32 right before the end of the half and the teams headed to the locker room for halftime.

In the second half, L&C rebuilt their double-digit lead, making it 64-54 after a breakaway dunk with 8:49 to play.

The Tornados regrouped and rallied, reeling off 11 straight points to take a 65-64 lead after Holiday's offensive rebound and layup. The Madisonville, Texas native finished with a team-high eight rebounds, including three on the offensive end.

The lead went back-and-forth between the teams before Meikle's jumper in the paint gave CTX the lead for good. He scored six of the team's final nine points to complete the second half comeback, winning it 79-74 win over the Pioneers.

The Tornados finished the night shooting 77 percent from the free throw line and forced 26 Pioneers turnovers, leading to 18 points, to secure its first win of the season.

Up next, CTX will stay out on the west coast and travel to Forest Grove, Ore., for the Ken Schumann Classic, hosted by Pacific. The Tornados will face the tournament host on Friday at 10 p.m. CST.
