GEORGETOWN, Texas –
Madi Maxwell scored a career-high 17 points, including nine in the first quarter, but it was not enough for the Concordia Texas women's basketball team, falling 63-56 to Southwestern on Thursday in the Robertson Center.
Maxwell was the go-to scorer for the Tornados in the first half and finished the night shooting 42 percent from the field, including knocking down three 3-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds.
Payton Berger also finished in double figures, producing 16 points along with a team-high seven rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half as the Pirates outscored CTX 15-12 in the opening quarter despite Maxwell's hot start, where she went a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor totaling nine points.
The Tornados bounced back in the second, led by Berger's seven points in the period. Her and Maxwell combined for 12 of CTX's 19 points in the quarter and took a two-point advantage into the locker room, leading 31-29 at halftime.
The Tornados opened up their largest lead of the game at 36-30 after
Sam Hopper's layup plus the free throw one minute into the third quarter.
Meanwhile,
Alyssa Marquez found her stroke from behind the arc, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in the period, but SU shot 46 percent from the field to retake the lead at 46-44 heading into the final frame.
In the fourth,
Kaycie Dunkerley tied the game at 49-all with her only 3-pointer of the night, followed by a Berger layup to give CTX the lead midway through the quarter. The Pirates, though, reeled off eight straight points to take the lead for good as the Tornados came up short 63-56.
Dunkerley is now seven 3-pointers away from breaking the program's all-time 3-point field goals made record set by Ashley Edwards, who played from 2001-05.
Next, CTX will remain on the road, traveling to Dallas for a showdown against Dallas Christian on Saturday at 2 p.m.
