Tornados come up short against No. 20 Whitman

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Concordia Texas men's basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field and had four players score in double figures, but came up short, falling to No. 20 Whitman 101-88 on Saturday in the final day of the Ken Schumann Classic.

The Tornados started the game off strong, building a double-digit lead in the first half thanks to the play of Philip Meikle and Antoine Henderson, both of whom scored in double figures in the period.

Concordia Texas shot 59 percent from the floor and took their largest lead of the game at 27-15 after Tommy Holiday's layup midway through the half. Meikle scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half, while Henderson had 10 points and the Tornados held a 48-45 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, CTX padded onto their lead early, opening the frame on an 8-2 run after Meikle finished on a driving layup.

The Blues, who are the reigning Northwest Conference champions, countered with their own scoring run and took their first lead since the first half at 63-62.

The Tornados regained the advantage following a pair of free throws by Zaid Harris, who had nine of his 11 points in the second half, but Whitman persisted. The Blues outscored CTX 38-24 the rest of the way as the Tornados fell 101-88.

Henderson finished the game with a team-high 19 points along with five rebounds, while Luis Gonzalez knocked down 6-of-7 from the field and produced a career-high 14 points in the loss.

Concordia Texas will wrap up their four-game west coast road trip on Sunday, facing Willamette in Salem, Ore., at 4 p.m. CST.
