IRVING, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's basketball team forced 30 turnovers and led from the opening tip to the final whistle in a wire-to-wire 69-43 win over the University of Dallas on Saturday at the Maher Center.
The Tornados used defensive pressure in the first half to hold the Crusaders to less than 30 shooting percentage from the field, while
Payton Berger led the offense with a near double-double of 15 points and seven rebounds for the team's second win in a row.
In the first quarter, the game had its only tie of the day at 2-2 before CTX pulled away with a 14-0 spurt led by Berger, who had seven points during the stretch, and the Tornados led 20-10 after one.
In the second quarter, the Crusaders cut the deficit to single digits after a layup in the first two minutes of the period, but CTX responded with a 7-2 run capped by a
Natalie Velardez free throw and led 34-20 as the teams headed to the locker room for halftime.
In the second half, the Tornados shot over 40 percent from the field, producing their highest scoring quarter of the game in the third frame, scoring 21 points.
Kaycie Dunkerley had seven of her nine points in the period, including a 3-pointer, giving her 170 3-pointers for her career. She now sit five away from breaking the program's all-time 3-pointers made record.
Concordia Texas held UD to only seven points in the final quarter, rolling to a 69-43 win for their second consecutive win.
Madi Maxwell added nine points and four rebounds in the win, while Chelsea Cogburn snagged a team-high eight rebounds and recorded six points on the day.
Next, the Tornados will go for their third consecutive win when they travel down to Seguin, Texas to face Texas Lutheran on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
