Tornados explode in the fourth quarter, complete comeback win over Rutgers-Newark

RICHARDSON, Texas – Kaycie Dunkerley hit the go-ahead jumper with 1:11 to go in the fourth quarter, capping off a season-high 21-point performance and giving the Tornados the lead for good as the Concordia Texas women's basketball team came from behind to defeat Rutgers-Newark 65-64 on Sunday in the first day of the UTD Classic.

The Tornados, who led by as much as nine in the first half, entered the final period trailing 50-45 to the Scarlet Raiders.

Concordia Texas came alive in the fourth quarter though, shooting 50 percent from behind the arc and outscoring Rutgers-Newark 20-14. Dunkerley and Madi Maxwell led the charge, combining for 16 of the team's 20 points in frame, including hitting 4-of-5 from downtown.

Dunkerley finished the game with a season-best five 3-pointers made, producing a game-high 21 points for the Tornados along with five rebounds. Maxwell, meanwhile, was influential as well, pouring in 14 points for the game, including eight in the final period.

In the first half, CTX forced 21 turnovers and outscored the Scarlet Raiders in both quarters, taking their biggest lead of the game with 1:24 to play in the half after an 8-0 run was capped off by a Kennedy Donovan fast break layup plus the free throw to make it 37-28.

At halftime, the Tornados held a 37-31 edge.

Rutgers-Newark did not go quietly though, outscoring the Tornados 19-8 in the third quarter to retake the lead before CTX rallied in the fourth frame to defeat the Scarlet Raiders 65-64.

Payton Berger nearly had a double-double on the night, pulling down a season-high 10 rebounds along with seven points, while Havyn Perez dished out six assists, added two steals and had three points for the game as CTX snapped its two-game skid.

The Tornados will look to end the decade on a winning note when they face Albion College on Monday at noon in the final day of the UTD Classic in Richardson, Texas.
