Dunkerley sets school record in loss to No. 21 Whitman

AUSTIN, Texas – Kaycie Dunkerley's 3-pointer at the 1:55 mark in the second quarter put her into the history books, becoming the school record holder for 3-pointers made in a career as the Concordia Texas women's basketball team fell to No. 21 Whitman 82-55 in their home opener on Friday.

Dunkerley, a senior out of Azle, Texas, entered Friday's contest at 174 made 3-pointers, tied with Ashley Edwards for the program's career record.

Dunkerley struggled from behind the arc early on in the game, missing her first three 3-point attempts before finding the bottom of the net from downtown in the second period on an assist from Havyn Perez, becoming the school's all-time record holder.

The Tornados hung with the Blues in the first quarter, taking advantage at the charity stripe, where they shot a perfect 8-of-8 in the frame, including a 4-of-4 performance from Madi Maxwell, who had seven of 11 points in the opening period. At the end of one, CTX trailed WC 14-13.

In the second quarter, the Tornados struggled offensively from the floor and were outscored by the Blues 19-10 in the period. Concordia Texas headed to the locker room, trailing 34-24.

In the second half, WC caught fire from the field, shooting 63 percent from the floor as the Tornados' deficit grew. Natalie Velardez scored eight of her 11 points in the second half alone, but it was not enought as CTX fell short, losing 82-55.

Concordia Texas will have a long layoff before returning the court on Dec. 29, when they will play in the first game of the UT Dallas Classic. The Tornados will face off against Rutgers-Newark at 12 p.m. in Richardson, Texas.
