AUSTIN, Texas –
Casen Novak went a perfect 6-for-6 from the plate and the Concordia Texas baseball team remained undefeated on the season, rolling past UT Dallas 10-3 in the second day of the Concordia Classic on Saturday.
The Tornados would score 10 runs on 17 hits, six of them coming from Novak, the junior out of Flatonia, Texas. He would tie the program's single-game record for hits, score three times and drive in a run as CTX defeated the Comets in a non-conference contest.
Novak and the Tornados would strike first, scoring two runs in the first inning on a
Reed Carlton two-run single, followed by another run in the second after Novak singled back up the middle, scoring
Ryan Clouse.
It provided more than enough run support for Deigo Cruz-Garcia, who allowed only one hit over his five innings of work, punching out four UTD batters, on his way to picking up his first win of the season.
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Tornado bats would break the game open as they batted around and scored six runs on five hits, including a pinch-hit two-run single by
Dakota Limon, which made it 9-1 at the end of six frames.
The Comets would score three runs in the seventh, but CTX never felt the pressure, cruising to a 10-3 win and remaining perfect to open the season.
Marcus Thach and
Carson Cox each had notable performances at the plate as well for the Tornados, as Thach went 3-for-5, walking once and scoring a run, while Cox tallied a pair of hits, driving in two and scoring a run.
It is the third time in the team's four games that they have scored at least 10 runs and they are off to their best start to a season since 2012.
The nightcap game between the Tornados and Redlands was postponed due to a light pole malfunction and it was pushed back to Sunday.
Concordia Texas will now close out its Concordia Classic tournament with a doubleheader against the Bulldogs with first pitch set for 10 a.m. at Tornado Field.
