AUSTIN, Texas – Trailing on two separate occasions, the Concordia Texas baseball fought back each time to pick up a 9-3 win over Schreiner on Sunday at Tornado Field.
Jacob Stegent and
Reed Carlton both racked up three hits on the day and CTX completed the series sweep and moved to 8-1 on the year.
The Mountaineers struck first with single runs in both the second and fourth innings to take an early 2-0 lead.
Casen Novak helped the Tornados respond, however, when he ripped a two-out single through the right side with the bases loaded to tie the game.
After Schreiner took the lead once again with a single run in the fifth, the Tornados answered one more time in the bottom half of the frame.
With
Carson Cox on second after a leadoff double, Carlton unloaded on a pitch and sent it to left center for an RBI triple to tie the game. One pitch later,
Owen Hill gave CTX the lead on an RBI single through the left side.
Jayden Hernandez kept the rally going with an RBI single of his own to make the score 5-3 through five innings.
The Tornados added two runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by an RBI single from
Marcus Thach.
With the score 7-3 in the eighth, Stegent added an exclamation point with a two-RBI single up the middle.
Stegent, a senior out of Brenahm, Texas, closed the contest 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Carlton, a senior from Austin, Texas, also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
On the hill for CTX,
Taylor Barksdale (2-1) picked up the victory after 4.2 innings of effective relief. Barksdale, a junior from Burnet, Texas, gave up no runs on just four hits and struck out three.
Next up, the Tornados will travel to Clarksville, Ark., to open American Southwest Conference play against Ozarks. The series will begin with a single game on Friday starting at 2:00 p.m.
