GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Behind a stellar start from
Jered Davenport and timely hitting, the Concordia Texas baseball team picked up a 10-1 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday at QuickTrip Field in game two of the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic.
Davenport, a freshman out of Lorena, Texas, was phenomenal in his collegiate debut on the mound, giving up just three hits over 4.0 innings as CTX moved to 2-0 on the season.
Offensively, the Tornados were led by
Casen Novak who finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs.
Along with Novak,
Bret Leiferman,
Carson Cox and
Owen Hill all had multi-hit games as CTX racked up 11 hits on the day as a team.
The scoring got started in the second as the Tornados produced three runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of Novak.
The third inning looked much like the second, with CTX scoring three runs, this time with a two-RBI single from Hill.
The Tornados added two runs in each of the next two innings, with Leiferman and Novak both producing clutch RBI base hits to make the score 10-0 at the end of the fifth.
The Cru scored their lone run of the game in the bottom half of the sixth, but could not add anything more as
Brian Brenchley was able to get a strikeout to end the threat.
Brenchley, a sophomore out of Plano, Texas, picked up the win in relief after tossing 3.0 innings, giving up no hits and striking out two.
UMHB threatened to score once again in the bottom of the eighth when they loaded the bases with nobody out.
Daniel Lewis shut the door, however, getting a pop out and back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the win.
The Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic concludes on Sunday when the Tornados face off against Hardin-Simmons at 4:00 p.m.
