AUSTIN, Texas –
Matthew Williams tossed a complete game shutout in game one and three players had multi-hit games in game two as the 24th-ranked Concordia Texas baseball team swept a doubleheader over UT Tyler Friday at Tornado Field.
The Tornados started the day with a 1-0 victory and followed it up with an 8-4 win to push their winning streak to eight games and move to 13-1 on the year, the best start in school history.
Williams (4-0) was dominant on the hill in game one, tossing a complete game shutout to help CTX grab the victory. The junior from Austin, Texas, allowing just three hits over 7.0 innings while striking out six and lowered his season ERA to 1.98. He has not allowed a run over his last 14.0 innings on the hill.
Ryan Clouse provided two of the three hits in the game for the Tornados, including hitting a leadoff single in the sixth. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Clouse came all the way around to score the only run of the game thanks to an error from UT Tyler. He finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and a run scored.
UT Tyler threatened to strike first in the top of the sixth with a leadoff double. Williams got out of the jam, however, by picking off the runner at second with one away. The Patriots only had one other runner in scoring position throughout the contest as the Tornados grabbed the 1-0 win.
The Tornados got the scoring started early in game two, plating three runs in the bottom half of the first.
Bret Leiferman produced the first run of the game with an RBI single up the middle to bring home
Carson Cox. One batter later,
Owen Hill brought home two more thanks to a two-RBI double in the game to make the score 3-0.
UT Tyler, the 2018 NCAA DIII National Champions, responded by scoring all four of their runs of the doubleheader in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Hill helped the Tornados answer immediately, however, as he lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home
Jacob Gwynne.
Gwynne, a junior from Friendwood, Texas, gave CTX the lead for good in the fourth when he ripped a two-out double down the left field line on a perfect hit-and-run to bring home
Casen Novak. Gwynne finished the game 3-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Tornados added a pair of insurance runs thanks to a pair of RBI singles off the bat of
Reed Carlton and
Dakota Limon to make the score 7-4.
A Patriot error in the seventh helped
Kalen Moreno come around and make the score 8-4 in favor of CTX.
Jered Davenport,
Jim McCabe and
Michael Smith were all dominant out of the bullpen for the Tornados. The trio combined to toss 5.0 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and striking out five.
Davenport, a freshman from Lorena, Texas, picked up his first collegiate win on the mound after coming on in relief in the fifth inning.
The Tornados will look to complete the sweep on Saturday at home as they face off with UT Tyler beginning at 1:00 p.m.
