AUSTIN, Texas – Six different players had multiple hits and the Concordia Texas baseball team completed the sweep of Belhaven on Saturday with a 12-2 run-rule victory at Tornado Field.
Reed Carlton led the way with a pair of hits and a season-high four RBIs as CTX moves to 24-9, 10-5 in American Southwest Conference play.
The Tornados pitching staff was also phenomenal on the day, not allowing a run after the third inning to help CTX pick up a 10-run victory over the Blazers.
After Belhaven jumped ahead early with a pair of runs in the top half of the second, CTX responded with a pair of runs themselves in the bottom half thanks to an RBI triple off the bat of
Matthew Williams and a sacrifice fly from
Ryan Clouse.
Carlton, a senior from Austin, Texas, gave the Tornados a lead they would not relinquish with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-2.
Neither team was able to produce anything offensively until the bottom half of the seventh inning. With two away,
Casen Novak ripped an RBI single to center and came all the around to score on an error by the center fielder.
The Tornados were not done in the inning, however, as
Reed Carlton and
Carson Cox both hit back-to-back RBI triples to give CTX a 9-2 lead.
Due to the ASC travel restrictions, the Tornados came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth needing three runs to grab the victory by run rule.
Novak,
Marcus Thach and
Bret Leiferman hit three straight RBI singles in the eighth to seal the win.
On the mound,
Michael Smith (4-0) was able to pick up the victory after tossing 4.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits.
Calvin Bush was spectacular in relief as well, throwing the final 2.0 innings and retiring all six batters he faced, five of which were via the strikeout.
Next up, the Tornados will face off against LeTourneau with a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Tornado Field.
