AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's tennis team are having their best season in program history, going undefeated in conference play to clinch the American Southwest Conference West Division title, and seek their first conference championship facing Louisiana College in the first round of the ASC Tournament on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
The Tornados have won 11 of their previous 12 matches, taking down Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-1 on April 19 to secure an undefeated year in ASC play and wrap up the ASC West title, the first in the program's four-year history.
Second-year head coach
Luke Helm is proud of what his team has accomplished during the regular season, but knows the job is not finished.
"We can't wait to get out there and battle together this week. What an opportunity," Helm said. "We're thrilled for our first division title, but our goal all year has been to win this conference, and we are looking forward to the opportunity to do just that."
Concordia Texas enters the tournament as the one seed from the west division, while LeTourneau, host of the championships, is the one seed from the east division.
The Tornados had five wins in conference play, but also faced the Yellow Jackets and the east's two seed, East Texas Baptist, in non-conference matches, defeating them 9-0 and 5-4, respectively.
Freshman
Joshua Bode will look to lead CTX to their first-ever conference title. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American, who won the ITA Southwest Regional back in the fall, is 9-2 at line one singles, ranking second among conference leaders.
Evan Pena Jr., meanwhile, has been superb in singles as well; going 13-2 in his matches during the regular season, including a 4-0 mark at line four.
In doubles, Pena Jr. and Compton have been a strong one-two punch for the Tornados, leading the conference with a 9-1 record, including a 7-1 mark at line three.
In the latest ITA regional rankings, the Tornados rank No. 15 in the west region, their highest ranking in school history.
Concordia Texas will begin their journey on Thursday, facing the east division's four seed, the Wildcats of Louisiana College, at 11:30 a.m. from the Davis Tennis Courts in Longview, Texas. The winner of the match will move on to the semifinals to face the winner of Hardin-Simmons and East Texas Baptist, on Friday.
