Bush twirls gem to lead Tornados to doubleheader sweep of UMHB

BELTON, Texas – Calvin Bush tossed a complete game shutout with a career-high 14 strikeouts in game one and the No. 24 Concordia Texas baseball team picked up a 13 inning thrilling victory in game two to grab a series win over Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday night at Red Murff Field.

The Tornados grabbed the first game of the day by a narrow margin of 1-0 and followed it up with a 7-5 win in game two to close the regular season with a 29-10 overall record and move to 15-6 in American Southwest Conference play.

Bush (4-0), a junior from Austin, Texas, allowed just three hits over 7.0 innings of work in game one to pick up the win on the hill. The 14 punch outs are the most by a single player since Jake Valadez fanned 14 against Louisiana College in the 2014 season and is tied for the seventh most all-time in program history.

Reed Carlton got CTX on the board in the top half of the first inning when he singled through the left side to bring home Casen Novak to make the score 1-0.

The lone run of the game proved to be enough, as Bush did not allow a runner to get passed second base in the contest.

Game two of the day started much like the first, with Novak scoring the first run of the game in the top half of the first thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Carlton.

The Cru responded quickly, however, as they took the lead with single runs in both the first and second innings.

The score remained 2-1 until the top half of the eighth when Jacob Gywnne tied the contest on an RBI single to left to bring home Leiferman. Gwynne, a junior from Friendswood, Texas, then came around to give CTX to lead on a bases loaded walk by Jacob Stegent.

Leiferman gave the Tornados an important insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single to bring home Marcus Thach.

UMHB was able to rally in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI single to tie the game at four and send the contest into extra innings.

In the 12th inning, CTX took the lead when Novak singled up the middle to bring home Kalen Moreno from second base.

With the score 5-4 in the bottom half of the 12th, the Crusaders once again answered with a run on an RBI single. They could not add any more, however, as Matthew Williams stranded the bases loaded.

Williams (10-1), a junior from Hyde Park, Texas, picked up the win on the hill after tossing 5.0 innings and striking out 10 batters.

After Carlton reached on an error and Carson Cox singled to begin the 13, both subsequently moved up 90 feet to put runners on second and third. A fielder's choice and an error by UMHB gave the Tornados a 6-5 lead.

Ryan Clouse added another run in the inning on a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home Cox.

Noah Pendergrass then shut the door in the bottom of the 13th, tossing a scoreless frame to earn his first career save.

The Tornados now await their seeding for the ASC Tournament, which is broken into two separate four team brackets. The first round of the tournament will be held at the top two seeds from Thursday, May 3 through Saturday, May 5.
