Garcia's three-run homer caps off Tornados' late rally

ALPINE, Texas – Tied at 1-1 in the seventh, the Concordia Texas softball team would put together a five-run inning, capped off by an Anissa Garcia three-run home run to defeat Sul Ross State 6-2 in the series finale on Saturday.

Knotted at one-all through the first six frames, the Tornados would save their best for the final inning.

Brianna Heredia and Haley Dennett would open the frame with back-to-back singles and Taylor Smith came to pinch-run at second for the go-ahead run.

Concordia Texas would take advantage of a Lobos' throwing error, scoring Smith to take the lead and moving Dennett to third. Payton Walker followed up with an RBI infield single to double the lead.

Two outs later, Ashley Hallmark would continue the rally with a single to right to put two runners on with Garcia coming to the plate.

On the first pitch, Garcia would send the ball over the center field wall for a three-run run blast, her second home run of the season, and the Tornados held a 6-1 lead going into the bottom half of the inning.

Sul Ross State would not go down easily though, stringing together three hits and scoring a run to cut it to 6-2. Taylor Verinsky, who had allowed one run until the seventh, would induce the ground out to end the game and secure her second win of the season.

Nine different Tornados would record a hit in the game, led by Olivia Kaase's 3-for-4 performance at the plate, including an RBI bunt single to open the scoring in the first. Dennett scored twice, while Garcia's lone hit was home run to break the game open.

Next, CTX will return home to host UT Tyler in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Tornado Softball Field. Due to the Patriots reclassifying to Division II, the games will not count towards the Tornados' conference record.
