SEGUIN, Texas –
Calvin Bush recorded double-digit strikeouts for the fourth straight game, tossing a complete game shutout and the No. 25 Concordia Texas baseball team picked up their first NCAA Regional win since 2017, defeating Texas Lutheran 6-0 on Friday.
Bush was nearly un-hittable for the Tornados, scattering three hits over nine innings and punching out 12 Bulldogs to pick up his sixth win of the season. With the 12 strikeouts, Bush is up to 104 for the season, ranking him third for strikeouts in a single season in school history.
In the first three frames, neither team was able to get things going offensively, combining for only one hit.
In the fourth,
Reed Carlton worked a walk to begin a two-out rally for CTX. After a
Carson Cox single,
Owen Hill put the Tornados on the board with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Carlton.
Jacob Stegent would double the lead with a single to center, scoring Cox from second and CTX led 2-0 after four frames.
Bush, meanwhile, was dealing for the Tornados, recording at least a strikeout each through the first five innings, including back-to-back punch outs to end the fifth.
In the seventh, Bush would run into trouble as TLU loaded the bases after working a two-out walk, but Bush remained cool, inducing a ground out to first end the threat and keep the Bulldogs off the board.
The Tornados would make TLU pay in the eighth, scoring three runs on three hits to extend their lead.
With one out and
Marcus Thach at second, Carlton would make it 3-0 on his RBI single to center. Cox followed up with a single, bringing up Hill, who drove in his second run of the game on a single up the middle pushing the lead to 4-0. One batter later, Cox would come around to score from second after a Bulldogs throwing error and CTX led 5-0 going to the ninth.
After a
Bret Leiferman RBI double tacked on an insurance run in the top half of the frame, Bush would take the mound, looking to complete the shutout.
Bush began the inning with back-to-back strikeouts, reaching double-digit strikeouts for the fourth game in a row. After a two-out walk, Bush secured the win with his 12th strikeout of the game and the Tornados took down TLU 6-0.
Thach, Carlton and Cox each had at least one hit and scored two runs apiece, while Hill finished 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs.
With the win, CTX advances to the winners bracket of the regional, where they will face Franklin (IN.) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Seguin, Texas at Katt-Isabel Field.
