ROUND ROCK, Texas –
Emily Newton scored a goal for the second straight game, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's soccer team surrendered a late score and fell short to Schreiner 2-1 on Tuesday.
Before the game even began, the teams had to wait out a two-and-a-half hour lightning delay before retaking the field and beginning warm ups.
Once under way, the Tornados would not wait long to opening the scoring, as Newton found the back of the net for the second game in a row, scoring in the 5th minute.
Concordia Texas would continue their offensive attack, outshooting the Mountaineers 7-3 in the first half, but were unable to extend their lead and went to the locker room in front 1-0.
In the second half, Schreiner would respond in 52nd minute, shooting past goalie
Sofie Gomez into the right side of the set to even it at 1-all.
The Tornados, meanwhile, looked to retake the lead, firing off 11 shots in the second half alone.
Concordia Texas' best opportunity came in the 85th minute off a
Brissa Renteria's shot on goal, but the Mountaineers were there for the save.
Still tied at 1-1, Schreiner took their first lead of the game, scoring from inside the box in the 89th minute.
The Tornados searched for a last minute goal, but ran out of time, suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 loss.
Next, the CTX will travel to Victoria, Texas for their first road game of the season, facing Houston-Victoria on Sunday at 1 p.m.
