AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas volleyball team registered double-digit service aces in back-to-back matches and rolled to straight set wins over Sul Ross State and St. Thomas (TX) on Friday.
The Tornados played in front of a home crowd for the first time this season, facing the Lobos and Celts in a round robin.
In the first match of the day, CTX faced conference foe Sul Ross State. The Tornados rallied from an early six-point deficit in the first set and went on to sweep the Lobos 25-23, 25-21 and 25-21.
In the first set, Sul Ross would jump out to an early lead, eventually pushing it to a 15-9 advantage after a CTX attack error.
The Tornados would not go down easily though, pulling off a 12-4 run to take a two-point lead.
Tristyn Massey finished off the set with a pair of kills, two of her game-high 13 kills in the match.
In the final two sets, Concordia Texas continued to hold off the Lobos to secure the win in straight sets. The Tornados finished wirh 12 service aces compared to SRSU's one as
Ally Combs,
Sarah Ghormley and
Georgia Quiroz all tallied three services aces apiece.
In the second match of the day, Concordia Texas faced St. Thomas (TX) in a rematch of their five-set thriller on Aug. 31.
The Tornados would not need five sets to decide the match this time, rolling to a 25-20, 25-16 and 25-21 win.
In the first set, CTX opened with a 17-5 run, aided by five of the team's 10 service aces during the scoring run.
The Celts, meanwhile, slowly chipped away at the deficit, pulling within two after a 5-0 run made it 20-18.
The Tornados would stay composed though, winning five of the next six points, capped off by a Massey kill and a UST error to take the first set.
After winning the second set handily, CTX looked to close the door on the Celts in the third set.
In the final set, holding a one-point advantage, the Tornados went on a quick 6-0 run to extend their lead and never looked back, rolling to their sixth sweep of the season and an 8-2 record.
Sam Mendez finished with a game-high 10 kills, while freshman
Sarah Ghormley nearly had a double-double, finishing with a game-high 14 digs and eight kills.
Concordia Texas will have a quick turnaround when they will face Southwestern on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Georgetown, Texas.
