GEORGETOWN, Texas –
Sarah Ghormley tied her career-high with 11 kills, but it was not enough, as the Concordia Texas volleyball team fell short to Southwestern 3-1 on Saturday at the Robertson Center.
After dropping the first set, the Tornados bounced back in the second set, but could not complete the comeback, falling in four sets 16-25, 25-23, 17-25 and 18-25.
In the first set, CTX kept it close early on as
Taryn Alexander and
Cassie Jackson each tallied their first kills of the match and cut the deficit to 11-9. Southwestern, though, would win seven of the next eight points on their way to winning the opening set.
The Tornados recovered in the following set, recording 10 kills as a team in the frame, and opened with an 11-5 run. The Pirates would not fold easily though, staging a run of their own and the teams were knotted at 13-all.
The teams continued in a back-and-forth battle till CTX pulled away at the end thanks to
Marjani Myles and
Sam Mendez's kills to close out the set win and even it at 1-1.
The Pirates would pull away early in the third and fourth sets and never looked back as the Tornados lost only their third match of the season, falling 3-1.
Four players finished with double-digit digs, led by
Rylee Davis' 17, while the Tornados as a team recorded a season-high nine blocks for the match.
Concordia Texas will return home and back to conference play when they play host to Howard Payne on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
