AUSTIN, Texas – On purple-out night, the Concordia Texas volleyball team, led by
Tristyn Massey's game-high 14 kills, defeated Howard Payne in straight sets on Tuesday.
The Tornados dominated the match from beginning to end against the Yellow Jackets, winning the sets 25-14, 25-12 and 25-13 to record their seventh sweep of the season.
Concordia Texas utilized their serves early and often against HPU, finishing with 14 service aces for the match, including four from Massey, while
Kyndall Ellis and
Ally Combs each had three.
It was a game of runs for the Tornados, opening the first set on an 8-2 spurt and never looked back thanks to Massey's four kills in the period.
Cassie Jackson and
Taryn Alexander capped off the set win with a double block to give CTX the early lead.
The Yellow Jackets, in set two, would win the first three points before the Tornados came roaring back with a 10-3 run to retake the lead. Howard Payne would close the gap to 12-11 after a CTX error, but it was all Tornados the rest of the set, winning 13 of the next 14 points to gain a two-set advantage.
In the final set, CTX won the first seven points and cruised to victory, defeating the Yellow Jackets in three sets for their ninth win of the year, and remain undefeated in conference play.
Rylee Davis added a team-high 11 digs for the Tornados, while
Georgia Quiroz assisted on 16 of the team's 34 kills.
Next, CTX will head out on the road for their first conference away game, facing Hardin-Simmons at 6 p.m. on Friday in Abilene, Texas.
