Tornados hang on late, defeat the Pirates 2-1

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Nicolas Kopinsky's header in the 59th minute would prove to be the game-winner as the Concordia Texas men's soccer team held on to defeat Southwestern 2-1 on Sunday.

It was a physical battle throughout the night for the Tornados and Pirates as four yellow cards and two red cards were issued between the two teams.

Southwestern opened the scoring, putting the ball into the back of the net off a set piece in the 13th minute and grab a 1-0 lead.

Concordia Texas would recover and rally though, scoring a goal in the 30th minute to even the score at 1-all. Joel Abrego would play a beautiful cross in from left side, finding Rodrigo Arellano at the back post and tapping it in for his first goal of his collegiate career.

At the half, the teams remained deadlocked in a 1-1 tie.

In the second half, the Tornados would put the pressure on the Pirates, firing off seven of their 12 shots in the final half.

In the 59th minute, CTX took advantage of an SU foul, receiving a free kick. After the ball took a deflection in the box, Kopinsky would head it past the goalie to give the Tornados their first lead of the game.

The Pirates would not go down without a fight in the final minutes, but CTX held off the late scoring attempts to secure their first win of 2019.

Next, the Tornados will head out to the west coast for a two-game road trip beginning on Friday, when they will take on Occidental at 9 p.m. CST in Los Angeles.
