ABILENE, Texas –
Sarah Ghormley registered a career-high 13 kills, including nine in the final set, and the Concordia Texas volleyball team continued their hot streak, sweeping McMurry on Saturday for their third win in a row and remain undefeated in conference play.
The Tornados hit .233 as a team and tallied double-digit kills in all three sets, defeating the War Hawks 25-18, 25-23 and 25-18, for their ninth straight-set win of the year.
In the opening set,
Marjani Myles led the charge for CTX, recording five of her 10 kills on the day in the period and the team jumped out to a 12-8 lead. Later in the set, holding a one-point lead, the Tornados would close it out on an 8-2 run to gain a one-set advantage.
In the following set, CTX would rally from a late five-point deficit and come from behind to win the second set.
The Tornados would go back and forth with McMurry throughout the second set before the War Hawks pulled ahead late and led 20-15. Concordia Texas would not back down though, going on an 8-2 spurt, including back-to-back blocks by
Tristyn Massey and Myles, retaking the lead at 23-22. The Tornados finished off the set thanks to kills from Myles and
Sam Mendez and went up 2-0 in the match.
In the final set, Ghormley came alive, registering nine kills and CTX would hold off a late McMurry comeback, winning the final five points to complete the sweep and move to 11-3 on the season, their best start since 1990.
Georgia Quiroz finished with 23 assists, while
Lianne VanDyke picked up her second double-double of the season with a 16-assist, 10-dig performance. Massey, meanwhile, led the defensive side, finishing with a team-high 13 digs.
The Tornados also took advantage at the service line, tallying 11 service aces, their seventh match this season with double digit service aces.
Next up, CTX will return home and step outside of conference play to host Southwestern on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
