Tornados sink the Pirates for fourth win in a row

AUSTIN, Texas – Four players recorded double-doubles and the Concordia Texas volleyball team extended their win streak to four games after defeating Southwestern for the first time since 1999 with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday.

Tristyn Massey, Sarah Ghormley, Lianne VanDyke and Georgia Quiroz all finished with a double-double on the night as the Tornados only dropped one set in the match, taking down the Pirates 25-19, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-21.

Massey was outstanding for CTX in the opening set, racking up six of her team-high 19 kills in the set as the Tornados hit at a .371 percentage. The Tornados held a slim two-point advantage before closing out the set on a 4-0 run capped by a Massey kill.

In the second set, CTX opened on a 9-2 spurt, but Southwestern chipped at the deficit, eventually knotting it up 17-all after a Tornados' attack error. The Pirates would close out the set on a 7-3 run to even the match at 1-all.

In the third set, Ghmorley and Sam Mendez provided the offensive firepower for CTX, registering 10 kills combined in the set, including six from Ghormley who finished with a career-high 14 on the night. Mendez, meanwhile, reached double figures in kills, finishing the match with 10 and the Tornados went up 2-1.

In the final set, Massey would catch fire once again, tallying eight kills as CTX used an 8-1 run to pull ahead 16-10. Southwestern would close the gap to four late in the set, but the Tornados held them off as Ghormley recorded back-to-back kills to secure the program's first win over the Pirates since 1999.

Massey finished the night with 19 kills and 16 digs, hitting at .341 percentage and registered five blocks at the net. Quiroz racked up 27 assists along with 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the year, while VanDyke, ended with 22 assists and 14 digs for her third double-double.

For Ghormley, it was her second double-double of the season, pouring in the 14 kills with 11 digs, while Rylee Davis totaled 17 digs for the match.

Next up, CTX will head to Marshall, Texas for the first American Southwest Conference crossover of the season, facing Louisiana College on Friday at 1 p.m. before a doubleheader with East Texas Baptist and Belhaven on Saturday.
