Tornados knock off ETBU 4-2 to open conference play

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Four different players scored a goal and the Concordia Texas women's soccer team opened conference play on a high note, defeating East Texas Baptist 4-2 on Thursday for their first win of the season.

The Tornados, who entered the night with only four goals scored for the season, were aggressive offensively from the first whistle, tallying 15 shots on the night, 10 of them on goal.

The Tigers, meanwhile, opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes of the game after a shot off the bar was followed up and scored by ETBU and led 1-0.

Concordia Texas would not wait long to respond though as Delaney Kennedy played a pass to Emily Newton, who fired it past the goalie for her third goal on the year and leveled the score at 1-all.

At the end of the half, the teams remained tied as they headed to the locker rooms.

In the second half, the Tornados would catch fire, scoring three goals in a 15-minute span to take their first lead of the game.

Kaycee Moore registered her first goal of the season in the 68th minute after a perfect through pass from Newton led Moore to beat the defensive backline and shoot it into the net to break the tie.

Less than 10 minutes later, Moore recorded one of her two assists on the night as she found Cayla Gonzalez in the box, who scored her first goal of 2019 and pushed CTX's lead to 3-1.

The Tornados continued their offensive press as Moore, this time, found Kennedy, who hammered it home to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Tigers would get a goal back in the final minutes of the game but CTX allowed nothing else as they opened American Southwest Conference play with a 4-2 win.

It is the first win of the season for the Tornados and the first for first-year head coach Andy Tunnicliffe.

Concordia Texas will have a quick turnaround as they will host LeTourneau on Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas.
