Garcia, O'Connor highlight day two of ITA Regional

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Jorge Garcia and Riley O'Connor both won their first two matches of the day to reach the quarterfinals of the flight B bracket as the Concordia Texas men's tennis team competed in the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional on Friday.

The second day of the regional consisted of the first two rounds of the singles brackets, while teams continued with second and third rounds of the doubles brackets.

Garcia and O'Connor along with Adam Compton were in the flight B singles draw.

Garcia won his opening match in a three-set thriller against St. Thomas (TX)'s Quashi Phillips, holding on in the third set 10-7 to advance to the next round. Garcia made quick work of Hendrix's Eric Menye in his second match of the day, winning it in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals of the bracket, which will be played on Saturday.

O'Connor, meanwhile, opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over St. Thomas (TX)'s Tyler Head to move on to the next round, where he continued the winning trend, defeating Ozarks' Jonah Martinez for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Compton, also playing in flight B, won his first match, but came up short in the following round, falling to Hardin-Simmons and ending his singles run.

In flight A singles, Joshua Bode looked to defend his singles title.

Bode opened the day with a straight-set win over Southwestern's Tyler Norman to move on to the next round. Bode's run would endin the following round, losing a heartbreaking three-set match to UT Dallas' Ritvik Ganesan, falling 10-7 in the decisive set.

No CTX player was able to reach the flight A round of 16 as Robin van Der Heiden and Esteban Arredondo both won their first match of the bracket, but faltered in the following match.

Evan Pena Jr. and Michael Davis, meanwhile, dropped their first matches of the day, but bounced back in the consolation flight A bracket with a win to reach the round of 16.

Jesse West and Corbin Hayes highlighted the Tornados' performance in flight C and D, respectively. West won both of his singles matches, including pulling out a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over East Texas Baptist's Dalton Barron and advance to the semifinals. Hayes, meanwhile, cruised to back-to-back straight-set wins for a spot in the semifinals.

In the afternoon, the team turned its attention to doubles play, where Garcia and Davis won their second and third round matches in flight B and advanced to the championship match, where they will face Southwestern.

O'Connor and Pena, also playing in flight B, began on a high note, winning their second round match over Hardin-Simmons, before falling to the Pirates.

In flight A, Bode, Van der Heidjen and Mungia, Arredondo's runs would each end in the second round, falling to Southwestern and Trinity, respectively.

Mario Martinez and Naiser closed out the day for CTX, winning the flight D doubles title after taking down Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-1 in the semifinals and securing the championship with an 8-4 win over Texas Lutheran.

The Tornados will continue play in the ITA regional on Saturday in Georgetown, Texas as the final rounds of the singles and doubles brackets are wrapped up.
