Tornados' win streak hits seven, longest since 1999

MARSHALL, Texas – Tristyn Massey reached double-digit kills for the fourth match in a row as the Concordia Texas volleyball team defeated East Texas Baptist and Belhaven on Saturday, extending their win streak to seven matches.

On the final day of the American Southwest Conference crossover, the Tornados dropped only one set and have now won seven games in a row, their longest win streak since 1999.

In the morning match of the day, CTX faced the crossover host Tigers, where they dropped only their fifth set in their last 10 matches, winning it 25-19, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-15.

Massey finished with a game-high 14 kills, while Sarah Ghormley continued her sensational freshman year with her third double-double of the season, tallying 10 kills and 14 digs. Georgia Quiroz, meanwhile, recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 25 assists and 17 digs.

After splitting the first two sets of the match, the Tornados took over in the third set, totaling a game-high 15 kills in the set and hitting .282 as a team to gain a 2-1 set advantage.

In the final set, CTX would put away ETBU quickly, jumping out to 12-4 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 25-15 set win to take care of the Tigers.

In the second match of the day, the Tornados amounted 14 service aces, their eighth match with at least 10 service aces this season, taking down the Blazers in straight sets, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-7.

Massey once again led the team in kills, registering 10 for the match along with 10 digs as well, for her fourth double-double of the year. Rylee Davis and Ghormley, meanwhile, each finished with a team-high 13 digs for the match.

In the opening set, holding a two-point advantage, CTX would go on a 7-2 run to reach set point. Massey clinched the set win with a kill on an assist from Lianne VanDyke, who had seven on the day.

The Tornados showed no mercy in the final two sets.

Concordia Texas ran out to an 18-6 lead in the second set before an Alexis Bustos kill and a BU error capped off the set win and made it 2-0 in favor of the Tornados.

In the final set, CTX dominated the Blazers, allowing only seven points and secured their 11th sweep of the season and seventh win in a row, the most since the program won 12 in a row on their way to a conference championship in 1999.

Next, the Tornados will return home to battle conference foe and reighning ASC champion Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at 6 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
