Tornados steamroll Linfield, Occidental to remain undefeated

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Concordia Texas Volleyball team continued their hot start to the season, opening the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational with back-to-back straight set wins over Linfield and Occidental on Friday to tie their best season-opening run since 1990.

The Tornados, behind an all-around team performance, never dropped a set over the two matches, remaining undefeated on the season and now are 6-0 on the year.

In the first match of the day, CTX faced Linfield, registering double-digit kills in all three sets to take the match 25-21, 25-19 and 25-21.

Rylee Davis led the way for the Tornados on the defensive end, racking up a game-high 20 digs, while Lianne VanDyke and Georgia Quiroz poured in double-digit assists. Ten different CTX players recorded a kill, led by Massey's team-high eight kills.

In the first set, it was a game of runs between the two teams before the Wildcats pulled ahead late in the set with a 21-20 lead. The Tornados did not break though, closing out the set on a 5-0 run, capped off by a Taryn Alexander set-winning kill.

In the second set, CTX jumped out to a 19-10 lead and never looked back, taking a commanding two-set lead.

In the final set, a pair of freshmen would make an impact off the bench as Emma Reed tallied four kills, giving the Tornados an early 16-9 lead. Sarah Ghormley, meanwhile, recorded the final two kills of the match to secure the sweep over Linfield.

In the second match of the day, the Tornados matched up against Occidental. After a dominating opening set win 25-11, CTX stayed on a roll, winning the final two frames 25-17 and 25-23, respectively.

Massey led with a team-high 13 kills, her third double-digit kill performance of the season, while Quiroz nearly had a double-double, tallying a game-high 16 assists along with eight digs.

In the final set, holding a two-set lead, the Tornados fell behind early to OC 14-9, but won seven of the next nine points to tie it up at 16-all. Concordia Texas would take their biggest lead of the set after a Kymdall Ellis kill made it 22-19.

The Tigers would not go away though, coming right back to win four of the next five points, knotting it at 23-all. The Tornados remained resilient though, thanks to back-to-back kills by Massey and Sam Mendez, clinching their fourth sweep of the season.

Concordia Texas will wrap up their west coast trip on Saturday, taking on Claremont Mudd-Scripps at 1 p.m. followed by a matchup against tournament host California Lutheran at 3:30 p.m. to close out the Cal Lu Fornia in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
