JACKSON, Miss. – The Concordia Texas men's basketball team nearly completed a 14-point second half comeback, but
Spencer Bone's game-tying 3-pointer was off the mark, falling 83-80 to Belhaven on Saturday inside the Heidelberg Gymnasium.
After being tied at 39-all heading into halftime, the Tornados struggled offensively from the floor in the second half, shooting only 36 percent. The Blazers, meanwhile, used an 11-1 to build a 62-50 lead with 11:06 left to play.
Belhaven went on to take their largest lead of the game at 75-61, after Luke Couch's jumper with 5:34 remaining.
Concordia Texas, though, would not go down without a fight.
Trevon Hester, who scored 14 of his career-high 19 points in the second half, and
Zaid Harris led the comeback. The duo scored 10 of the Tornados' next 12 points to cut the deficit to six.
Philip Meikle, who had a rough shooting performance throughout the game, followed with his own 5-0 spurt to bring CTX within one at 79-78 with over a minute to play.
After exchanging free throws, the Blazers pushed their lead back up to three with under 30 seconds remaining. On CTX's final possession, Bone's game-tying 3-pointer from the wing was off the mark and the Tornados came up short 83-80.
Harris ended the game with 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Antoine Henderson, who carried CTX offensively in the first half, finished with a near double-double of 14 points and eight rebounds.
Up next, the Tornados will return home and look to end their four-game losing streak, hosting McMurry on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
