AUSTIN, Texas –
Trevon Hester's driving layup with two seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team held off Mary Hardin-Baylor's late comeback to secure an 88-86 win on Saturday inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
The Tornados led by as much as 17 points after a
Philip Meikle 3-pointer to open the second half, but the Cru would not go away, pulling even at 86-all after a Logan Hicks layup plus the foul.
Hicks would miss the go-ahead free throw though and CTX secured the rebound with 20 seconds left, playing for the final shot of the game.
Hester dribbled up the court, waiting near the half court line, as the seconds ticked down.
With six seconds on the clock, Hester made his move, dribbling right, past the Cru defender and into lane, getting the go-ahead layup to drop with two seconds remaining.
Mary Hardin-Baylor's Sam Moore heaved a half court shot at the buzzer but it was no good as the Tornados won it 88-86, for their first win against the Cru since 2018.
In the first half, the game experienced nine lead changes and seven ties before CTX closed out the period on a 26-12 run and took a 57-43 lead into the locker room.
The Tornados shot over 51 percent from the field in the half and were led by
Tommy Holiday's 12 points. He finished the day with a double-double, his second of the season, producing 14 points along with 10 rebounds, including five of them on the offensive glass.
A total of five players finished in double figures for CTX, led by Meikle's team-high 17 points, including 12 of them coming in the second half. Hester and Luis Gonzales, meanwhile, each added 14 points for the game.
Ronnie Hamilton was efficient off the bench for the Tornados, recording 13 points on six shots, while
Gonzalo Munoz nearly had a double-double, totaling nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. It is the second straight game that Munoz has pulled down double-digit boards.
Up next, the Tornados will travel to Abilene, Texas to face off against McMurry on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., going for their fourth win in a row.
