AUSTIN, Texas –
Payton Berger scored a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds, registering her first double-double of the season as the Concordia Texas women's basketball rallied from a second half deficit to defeat Ozarks 59-55 on Saturday inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
The Tornados put on defensive clinic, holding the Eagles to 33 percent shooting from the field. Concordia Texas also made it count on the glass, outrebounding Ozarks 49-40, including pulling down19 offensive boards, six of which came from Berger, who tied her season-high with 10 rebounds on the day.
In the first quarter, the Tornados were 0-of 7 from behind the arc, but made it count at the free-throw line, knocking 6-of-7 from the line and led 16-11 after one.
The Eagles opened the second frame on an 8-2 run to take first lead since the game's opening minute, but CTX was quick to respond. Led by
Natalie Velardez's five points in the period, the Tornados closed out the half on a 10-2 run and took a 30-24 advantage into the locker room.
Ozarks countered in the third quarter though, outscoring CTX 19-11 and held a 43- 41 lead going into the final frame.
Berger, who only had six points through three, saved her best for last, recording eight points in the fourth quarter. She finished 3-of-4 from the floor, including knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in the period.
Concordia Texas outscored the Eagles 10-4 in the paint and sealed the win at the charity stripe as
Havyn Perez hit a free throw with under 10 seconds to play to make it a two-possession game as the Tornados went on to win it 59-55.
Velardez finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds, while
Madi Maxwell grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and added seven points as CTX picked up their first conference win of the season.
Next, the Tornados will head out on the road to Pineville, La. for a showdown against Louisiana College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
