Donovan, Tornados fall short to LeTourneau

LONGVIEW, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's basketball team staged a second half comeback on Thursday, but fell short to LeTourneau 63-60 as Kaycie Dunkerley's go-ahead 3-pointer was off the mark.

Kennedy Donovan tied her career-high with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting in the loss, while Natalie Velardez nearly had a double-double for the Tornados, scoring nine points and recording a team-high eight rebounds.

Concordia Texas struggled offensively in the opening quarter, shooting 5-of-16 from the floor and trailed 19-11 at the end of one.

The Tornados bounced back in the following quarter though, shooting 62 percent from the field. Trailing 27-19, CTX went on a 15-6 run to take their first lead of the game after Donovan's lone 3-pointer of the night.

At halftime, the Tornados headed to the locker room trailing the YellowJackets 36-34.

In the second half, CTX had their highest scoring output of the game in the third quarter, outscoring LETU 23-17.

The Tornados trailed 40-34 early in the third but did not go away, using an 11-2 run late in the quarter to retake the lead after Dunkerley knocked down a pair of free throws.

She finished the night with 13 points, including an 8-for-10 mark at the charity stripe, while pulling down seven rebounds.

Concordia Texas headed to the final period, holding a 49-45 advantage.

In the fourth, the Tornados made only two shots from the field as the Yellow Jackets retook the lead.

Concordia Texas had one last opportunity, down 62-60 with 10 seconds left on the clock. The ensuing possession, Dunkerley's 3-pointer from the top of the arc was off and the YellowJackets secured the rebound, going on to win it 63-60.

The Tornados will continue their road trip on Saturday, traveling to Marshall, Texas for a conference battle against East Texas Baptist at 1 p.m.
