MARSHALL, Texas –
Havyn Perez scored a career-high 12 points,
Kaycie Dunkerley knocked down three 3-pointers, but the Concordia Texas women's basketball came up short to East Texas Baptist 57-52 on Saturday.
Perez shot 4-of-6 from the field, dished out five assists and pulled down a team-high six rebounds to lead the way for the Tornados. Dunkerley, meanwhile, inched closer to the American Southwest Conference record for 3-pointers made in a career, five away from breaking the record.
The Tornados controlled the game for most of the first half, building a double-digit lead after Dunkerley's 3-pointer midway through the second quarter.
Defensively, Concordia Texas locked down the Tigers, holding them to 15 first-half points on 38 percent shooting from the field. The Tornados, meanwhile, shot 6-of-13 from beyond the arc and headed to the locker room at halftime with a 25-15 advantage.
East Texas Baptist responded quickly, opening the third quarter on a 10-0 run to tie the game up.
Perez and Dunkerley followed with back-to-back 3-pointers though as CTX scored 10 straight points to reclaim their double-digit lead. Dunkerley, along with
Natalie Velardez, each had five points in the quarter and the Tornados headed to the fourth leading 40-32.
In the final quarter, the Tigers outscored CTX 25-12, taking their first lead since the game's opening minutes after a 13-2 run to make it 53-50 with a minute to play.
Payton Berger would cut it to one after a layup, but the Tornados were unable regain the lead, falling to ETBU 57-52.
Dunkerley finished the day with 11 points, while
Kennedy Donovan went 3-of-4 at the free throw line, producing eight points. Berger and
Alyssa Marquez, meanwhile, each added six points apiece in the loss.
Concordia Texas will close out their regular season on the road, facing Sul Ross State on Thursday followed by the season finale on Saturday against Howard Payne. The Tornados will face the Lobos on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Alpine, Texas.
