Tornados fall to La Verne in final day of Concordia Classic

AUSTIN, Texas – Casen Novak had a four-hit day in the leadoff position but the Concordia Texas baseball team could not generate enough offense, falling to La Verne 10-3 on Sunday in the final day of the Concordia Classic.

Novak went 4-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base, while Bret Leiferman had a hit, driving in a run and scored a run, but the Tornados could not keep the Leopards off the base paths as they scored at least a run in six of the game's nine innings.

Novak now has 205 hits for his career, seven away from tying Scott Bunting for the most hits in program history. Leiferman, meanwhile, is up to 208 hits for his career.

La Verne opened the scoring in second inning, pushing across a pair of runs and ending starter Noah Pendergrass's day early. They tacked on another run in the third to make it 3-0.

Collin Mask put the Tornados on the board in the bottom half of the inning, rocketing a ball over the left field fence for a solo home run. The inning continued as Dalton Watts and Novak followed with singles. After a sac bunt moved the runners over, Watts scored on Leiferman's RBI ground out to cut the deficit to 3-2.

After a scoreless fourth frame between the teams, the Leopards scored seven runs over the next four innings.

Concordia Texas pushed across a run in the sixth but were unable to create anything in the final three frames, falling to La Verne 10-3.

Owen Hill also had a strong day at the plate for the Torndos, going 2-for-3 on the day, while Mask and Watts each had a hit for the game.

Concordia Texas will head out on the road and open conference play against Belhaven, facing the Blazers in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.
