AUSTIN, Texas –
Ashley Hallmark had back-to-back two-hit outings but the Concordia Texas softball team fell short to Belhaven in a doubleheader on Friday to open American Southwest Conference play.
In the first game, the Tornados trailed 3-2 heading into their final at-bat, loading the bases with two outs, but
Bailey Bryan struck out to end the game and come up short against the Blazers.
Concordia Texas open the game's scoring in the first inning as Hallmark worked a one-out walk followed by an
Anissa Garcia single, putting runners on the corners. On a double steal, Hallmark would beat the throw home from second for the first run of the game.
Belhaven responded with two runs to the next inning to go in front 2-1 after two frames.
In the third, Hallmark jump started the Tornados' offense again, this time with a one-out single. She stole second and third base and came home to score on a Blazers' throwing error, evening even the game at 2-all.
Belhaven retook the lead with a run in the sixth, but CTX did not go down without a fight.
In the seventh,
Zoie Burton led off with a walk, followed by
Maria Arroyo's single. Two outs later, Garcia worked a walk to load the bases. Bryan entered the batter's box as a pinch-hitter. After working a full count, she stuck out, ending the game and CTX fell in game one.
Hallmark finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate along with a walk and scored both of the Tornados' runs.
In game two, CTX's pitching struggled to find the strike zone, issuing seven walks and hitting a pair of batters.
The Tornados scored the first run of the game once again, this time on Arroyo's sac fly to center, scoring Hallmark from third. They added a run in the third on
Sarah Brooks' sac bunt, but the team trailed the Blazers 3-2 through three innings.
In the fourth, BU broke the game open with a five-run inning to take an 8-2 lead.
Concordia Texas would out hit the Blazers, led by Hallmark and
Miranda Mueller, who each recorded two hits for the game, but were unable to spark a comeback, falling short to BU 8-2.
The Tornados will look to salvage a game on Saturday in the series finale against the Blazers with first pitch at noon at Tornado Softball Field.
