BROWNWOOD, Texas –
Kaycie Dunkerley shot 6-of-11 from the field, including hitting five 3-point buckets, to become the American Southwest Conference's career record holder in 3-pointers made, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's basketball team's second half rally fell short to Howard Payne 80-73 on Saturday inside the Brownwood Coliseum.
Dunkerley entered the day, four away from tying Hardin-Simmons' Lauren Harris for the conference record for 3-pointers made in a career.
In the opening quarter, the Tornados scored 23 points and went a perfect 5-for-5 from outside the arc but trailed the Yellow Jackets by one. Dunkerley had eight points in the period, knocking down a pair of treys.
In the second quarter, there were four lead changes and three ties.
Kennedy Donovan and
Natalie Velardez each had five points in the period, but CTX headed to the locker room trailing 41-36.
Dunkerley, meanwhile, had a game-high 13 points at the halfway point, including three 3-pointers.
In the second half, HPU widen their lead to an 11-point advantage early in the third quarter before Dunkerley hit a shot from downtown as a part of a quick 6-0 spurt and pulling the Tornados within five midway through the third period.
The Yellow Jackets outscored CTX 19-15 in the quarter though and took a 60-51 lead into the fourth.
At the 8:28 mark, Dunkerley hit her fifth triple of the game, becoming the new conference record holder for 3-pointers made in a career. The basket was a part of six straight points scored by the Tornados, chipping away to make it 60-56.
It was as close as CTX would cut it in the period though; as HPU went back up by double digits and went on to defeat the Tornados 80-73.
Dunkerley finished the game with a game-high 19 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Madi Maxwell, meanwhile, scored nine of her 13 points in the second half and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Verlardez also finished in double figures, recording 11 points and five boards for the game.
The Tornados finish the regular season 9-16, 6-10 in conference play and qualify for the conference tournament as the four seed out of the ASC West Division.
Concordia Texas will travel to Richardson, Texas to face the one seed out of the ASC East and tournament host UT Dallas on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the tournament.
