Munoz, Meikle lead Tornados to sixth straight win

AUSTIN, Texas – Gonzalo Munoz recorded his first double-double of the season, Philip Meikle scored a season-high 24 points and the Concordia Texas men's basketball team remained on a roll on Thursday, defeating Howard Payne 101-83 inside Concordia Fieldhouse for their sixth straight win.

Munoz and the Tornados took advantage of second opportunities throughout the night, pulling down 21 offensive rebounds as a team, which led to 24 second-chance points.

Munoz led the way with five offensive boards and finished with 10 total rebounds and a season-high 20 points to record his first double-double of the season. It is the fifth straight game he has reached double figures in rebounds.

Defensively, CTX defensively harassed the Yellow Jackets all game, forcing 28 turnovers that resulted in 28 points. The Tornados also made it count at the free-throw line, where they shot 80 percent as a team, led by Meikle's 9-of-9 performance.

Meikle, the senior out of Cypress, Texas, scored a team-high 24 points, drawing one step closer to 1000 points for his career. He now sits nine points away from becoming the 18th player in program history to reach the 1000-point milestone.

In the first half, CTX and HPU went back and forth, registering three lead changes and a pair of ties.

The Tornados held a slim 37-35 lead with 2:15 to go before closing out the half on an 8-1 run, including five points from Meikle, and led 45-36 as the teams headed to the locker room.

In the second half, CTX began to get in a groove offensively, shooting 52 percent from the field in the period.

Three Tornados reached double figures in scoring in the second half alone, led by Meikle's 15-point outburst on 4-of-6 shooting, including three made 3-pointers. Munoz scored 10 points for the second consecutive half, while Antoine Henderson came off the bench, producing 10 points along with five rebounds.

Concordia Texas opened the half on a 18-5 run to take a 22-point advantage, their largest lead of the game, and never looked back, running away with a 101-83 win.

Tommy Holiday and Henderson each nearly had double-doubles, as Holiday poured in nine points and added eight rebounds, while Henderson finished with 12 points and eight rebounds as well. Zaid Harris and Jordan Berry, off the bench, combined to go 10-for-12 at the free-throw line and scored eight points apiece.

Concordia Texas has now won six games in a row, their longest win streak since recording seven straight victories during the 2016-17 season.

The Tornados will go for their seventh consecutive win on Saturday when they welcome the top team in the American Southwest Conference West Division, Sul Ross State, on Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse. Prior to the game, the team will honor its two seniors, Meikle and Ronnie Hamilton.
