Meikle's historic day not enough as Tornados fall to the Lobos

BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas – On his last game played inside Concordia Fieldhouse, senior Philip Meikle made it a memorable one, pouring in a season-high 33 points and along the way became the 18th player in program history to score 1,000 points in his career as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team fell short to Sul Ross State 105-98 on Saturday.

Prior to tip off, the Tornados honored Meikle along with senior teammate Ronnie Hamilton for their contributions to the program during their four-year careers.

Meikle enter the day nine points shy of the 1,000-point milestone, seeking to become just the 18th Tornado ever to accomplish the feat and the first since Ben Page reached 1,000 points during the 2017-18 season.

The Cypress, Texas native dealt with foul trouble in the first half though and only amounted five points.

Meanwhile, Gonzalo Munoz heated up from behind the arc, knocking down 5-of-6 3-pointers in the half. The Tornados went on a 24-9 run midway through the first half, building up a 20-point lead over the Lobos after Munoz's fourth 3-pointer of the game.

Sul Ross State did not go away though, cutting CTX's lead down to 54-41 as the teams headed to the locker room.

In the second half, the Lobos slowly chipped away and pulled even at 57-all after opening the period with a 16-3 run.

At the 11:54 mark, the Tornados trailing 63-60, Meikle headed to the line for a pair of free throws, two points shy of history. He would make both free throws to reach the 1000-point club and become the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 points in their Tornado career.

Meikle was not done though.

After Trevon Hester's layup at the 10:21 mark to pull CTX within two, Meikle would score the next 18 points for the Tornados, capping off the scoring streak with his third 3-pointer of the game.

Alexander Estrada's lone 3-pointer of the game cut the Lobos' lead to one with under two minutes to play, but it was as close as the Tornados make it, as they were unable to regain the lead late, falling 105-98.

Meikle finished with a season-high 33 points, including a 10-for-10 performance at the free-throw line, while Luis Gonzalez and Tommy Holiday each registered 11 points for the game before fouling out late in the second half.

Hamilton, meanwhile, in his final game inside Concordia Fieldhouse, scored five points and dished out a game-high four assists in the loss.

The loss ends CTX's six-game winning streak, their longest win streak since the 2016-17 season.

The Tornados will look to begin a new winning streak on Thursday, when they travel to Longview, Texas for a matchup against LeTourneau at 7:30 p.m.
