AUSTIN, Texas –
Simone Langland allowed only two runs over six hits and struck out five hitters in a complete game win as the Concordia Texas softball team split a doubleheader against Schreiner on Saturday.
In the first game, the Tornados were only able to produce three hits, but showed patience at the plate, drawing 10 walks to score four runs and win it 4-2.
Concordia Texas did not wait long to open the scoring, recording all four of their runs in the first three frames.
In the first, the Tornados worked four walks, including three in a row after
Maddy Ellison reached on a full count to score
Anissa Garcia from third to make it 1-0.
In the following frame, CTX tripled their advantage, loading the bases up once again.
Ashley Hallmark earned an RBI on her second walk of the game, which scored
Miranda Mueller. One out later,
Katie Hoke scored on a
Summer Harper ground out, pushing the lead to 3-0.
The Tornados tacked on a run in the third on a double steal between
Maria Arroyo and
Danielle Diaz and led 4-0 after three innings.
Schreiner cut the deficit in half during the ensuing inning, making it 4-2 after a double to left center, but Langland ended the scoring threat on a ground out.
The Cypress, Texas native would go the distance for CTX, striking out five batters and allowing only six total hits, including two over the final three frames, securing the win in the first game of the doubleheader.
In the second game of the day, the Tornados and Mountaineers each staged late-inning rallies, leading to extra innings, where CTX fell short 6-3.
In the first four innings, neither team showed a sign of weakness, combing for five total hits but remained even at 0-0.
Schreiner broke the scoreless tie with a couple of runs in the fifth for a 2-0 advantage.
The Tornados countered in the following inning as Hallmark and
Sarah Brooks led off the frame with a single and a double, putting runners in scoring position with no outs.
Harper and Garcia followed with back-to-back sac flies to tie the game at 2-all. Ellison continued the inning, working a walk and stole second.
Ashley Soto gave CTX their first lead of the game, ripping an RBI single to left to make it 3-2.
The Mountaineers, though, took advantage of a pair of Tornados' errors in the seventh inning, tying the game up once again to force extra innings.
Schreiner pushed across three runs in the eighth and CTX was unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning, falling in the doubleheader finale.
The Tornados will have a quick turnaround, hosting Southwestern on Tuesday, in a non-conference doubleheader at 5 p.m. at Tornado Softball Field.
