Tornados fall late to Belhaven in home opener

AUSTIN, Texas – Antoine Henderson and Trevon Hester both scored 25 points, but the Concordia Texas men's basketball team came up short against Belhaven on Friday, falling 102-98 in their home opener.

Henderson shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the field on the night to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks. Hester also put forth a strong performance, putting up career highs in both points and assists with 25 and eight respectively.

The Blazers came out strong to begin the first half, and were able to jump out to a 28-17 lead about halfway through the period. The Tornados were able to storm back and outscore Belhaven 30-15 for the remainder of the first half, led in large part by a combined 24 points from Henderson and Alexander Estrada during this run, and went into the locker room leading 47-43 at the halfway point.

Belhaven struck quickly in the second half, opening with a staggering 18-4 run. However, a three-pointer from Grant Goosby ignited the Tornados' fire, and they took the lead 65-64 with 10:46 left to play.

The Tornados and the Blazers swapped leads until the 4:00 mark, when Belhaven gained the advantage and held their ground despite a second half where Concordia Texas shot 50 percent from the floor.

Goosby provided a spark off the bench for CTX, finishing with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 4-for-8 from behind the arc. Estrada was able to cash in from deep throughout the contest, scoring 18 points thanks to six made shots from downtown.

Concordia Texas will have a quick turnaround, facing off against Louisiana College at home on Saturday at 2 p.m.
